Northwest Arkansas Photographer Specializing in Fine Art Weddings

I can think of no better way to spend an hour on a sunny Thursday than zipping around downtown with Amy & Damon. These two are so full of life and love and it’s CONTAGIOUS. They’re both dancers (as I’m sure you’ll be able to tell when you scroll through these because I kept making them bust the moves for me) and beautiful and kind and just the most perfect couple. We rescheduled this session three times because Spring in Arkansas is like that, but it’s safe to say this session was worth the wait. I can’t wait for their wedding this weekend at the Ballroom at I Street! Now scroll & enjoy! xo!

I am SO excited to share this gorgeous Natural State Rock & Republic wedding editorial with you guys!! This venue has been around a long long time (you may remember it as Magnolia Gardens), but it recently got a refresh that just brings it to a whole new level. The property is so gorgeous, with enormous magnolia trees, an arbor made of wisteria, brick paths and so many more classic and beautiful features. The main house is full of antique furniture, but you’ll notice modern twists in the decor as you tour around and see everything it has to offer!

I helped photograph one of the last weddings that was held at Magnolia Gardens before they closed, and when I first saw that the property was being reopened I was giddy! I immediately reached out to one of my favorite planners (favorite because she’s SO much fun and also INCREDIBLY talented) to see if she wanted to collaborate on a wedding editorial shoot at Natural State Rock & Republic, and what she designed was prettier than my wildest dreams. Everything was absolutely perfect, from the florals that PIGMINT created to the models that absolutely rocked their gowns and suits, and the photos are just so beautiful (if I do say so myself)!

One of my favorite things was that Christa threw in a little bike theme because Natural State Rock & Republic is actually a biking BNB!

Venue was Natural State Rock & Republic
Planning & design by Christa with JLK Weddings
Florals by PIGMINT
Dresses from Violet’s Bridal & Formal
Drinks by Mint2Mix
Catering by Carmelita Catering Co.
Hair & makeup by Lavonne BeautyBekah, Armoni
Paper products by Paper Supply Co.
Rentals from Eventures & HOST Rentals
Linens from Nuage Designs
Cake was Rick’s Bakery
Flower girl jumpsuit was from Dillards
Models were Mimi, Scotty, Dom, Caitlin, & Kylie

Oh man, Betsy and Cameron’s engagement session was SO. MUCH. FUN. We zipped around Bentonville and found so many cute spots for their photos. We laughed a lot and as with so many sessions, I could have kept photographing all night! These two cuties are getting married at the Grandeur House this Fall and I just absolutely can’t wait!

Miranda and Dave are troopers, y’all. They were originally supposed to have their RECORD Bentonville wedding in 2020 and we all know what that means — they rescheduled…and rescheduled…and finally, after waiting so long, they were able to have their celebration! They planned a gorgeous and elegant event at RECORD (with the perfect amount of personal touches — retro video games!!) with JLK Weddings; the venue was perfectly dressed with purple and velvet accents, an amazing personalized dance floor, and pretty things literally everywhere I looked.

RECORD Bentonville Wedding

Leah & Kenny’s beautiful Ballroom at I Street wedding was so dreamy. We were all holding our breath to see what the rain was going to do, and not only did it not rain and we were able to have their ceremony out in their gorgeous courtyard. AND. Guys. Right in the last few minutes of our portrait time, the sun even came out! I’m pretty sure I squealed. Cloudy days are good for nice even light, but I LOVE the sun (especially right before sunset) and I absolutely couldn’t have asked for better timing.

It was the sweetest day full of love and laughs (this crew LOVES to laugh) and spending time with Leah and Kenny’s family and friends made it so obvious how loved these two are!

Here are some of the amazing vendors who helped make this wedding so awesome:

Coordinator: Brooke Smith with the Ballroom at I Street

Ceremony & Reception venue: Ballroom at I Street

Hair & makeup: Brooke with NWA Occasions

Barn at the Springs Wedding

Looking at these images, it’s really hard to remember that the day of this Ballroom at I Street wedding editorial shoot was forecasted to be dark, rainy & stormy all day long (with a slight chance of a little break in the clouds right at sunset). And I say it’s hard to remember the disappointing weather because when I look at these images, I see nothing but LIGHT. The beautiful light lavender color scheme that Rona and her team at Mint & Mix chose for this setup is the antethesis of dark and dreary, and the smiles and warmth of these gorgeous brides, bridesmaids and grooms creates a light all it’s own that could never be dampened by a little rain & clouds.

The Ballroom at I Street was the most perfect place for a classically beautiful shoot like this, and all the vendors brought their A-game. And in the end, we DID have a short break in the clouds, and we were fortunate to be out on location with some gorgeous horses right at sunset to catch that glowy golden hour light. It was the most magical end to a magical day! Here are the vendors and models that made this shoot amazing!

Maggie & Aaron’s Snowy Osage House Wedding

What could I possibly say about Maggie & Aaron’s snowy Osage House wedding that would do it justice? I’m nearly without words to describe the incredible environment of love and celebration that I felt from Aaron, Maggie, and their friends and family. I instantly fell in love with Maggie’s sweet personality and huge heart when we first grabbed coffee and chatted about their wedding last year. When you’ve been photographing weddings for as long as I have, you develop a really accurate spidey sense (nerd alert) about these things, and I knew their friends and family would be amazing. Boy was I right!

Stephanie with Amanda Reed Weddings did the BEST job making everything spectacular (as always), and it even SNOWED. I was absolutely giddy, but really I should have expected it since it rained at their engagement session! (It was the most romantic engagement session ever and I promise I will blog it someday soon. 😅)

Here are all the talented vendors that contributed to their gorgeous snowy Osage House wedding:

Northwest Arkansas Wedding Venues

I’ve been working hard to gather all the Northwest Arkansas wedding venues for you, to have them all in a handy list separated by category. Google and The Knot can sometimes feel overwhelming, with so many choices and no good way to sort them by type. So I’ve gotchu, boo. Scroll down & find your dream venue!

Modern Northwest Arkansas Wedding Venue

Modern Wedding Venues in NWA

Each of these venues give a modern, airy, bright feel when you walk into their ballroom. If you’re hoping for a beautiful, timeless almost-blank canvas to turn into your dream wedding, look no further! Sky high ceilings with chandeliers and an open, airy reception space makes them feel so elegant.

Estate Wedding Venues in NWA

I labeled these venues as Estate venues because they each incorporate a house, either for getting ready areas or for the actual ceremony and reception. That ‘estate’ feel is something that makes your wedding seem so comfortable, like you’re inviting all your friends and family to your house & getting married!

Garden Wedding Venues in NWA

Garden weddings are very popular because they’re classically beautiful and timeless. Each of these venues has gorgeous landscaping & grounds for outdoor outdoor festivities (and most of them have really pretty indoor spaces too)!

Hotel Wedding Venues in NWA

Two of my most favorite venues in NWA are right here. These hotels have the space to allow you to get ready, have your ceremony, and your reception all on the same property. And while these two are pretty opposite in terms of style – 21C is very modern and Carnall Hall is very classic – they’re both incredibly beautiful and great choices for your big day!

City Loft Vibe Wedding Venues in NWA

Exposed brick and exposed beams, large windows, and patio space is pretty much what I think of when I think of a downtown loft. And each of these Northwest Arkansas wedding venues qualify absolutely beautifully! Loft vibe spaces are so cool because they can easily go in whatever stylistic direction you want to take them, but with a little added boho-y vibe from the existing features of the space.

Country Club Wedding Venues in NWA

Country clubs are high-end spaces that are surrounded by acres and acres of rolling, manicured hills for people to play golf on. I have seen some incredibly beautiful outdoor ceremonies on golf courses, and some really classy receptions in their ballrooms. And I added Lakepoint to the list because although it’s not situated on a golf course, it is in a golf community and very much has that country club vibe (and a gorgeous lake view with a sunset).

Unique Wedding Venues in NWA

These venues don’t really fall into any of the other categories, in my opinion. The Air Museum is full of planes in a giant hangar and that’s pretty epic. You’ll end up with photos unlike your friends’ photos. And Theatre Squared is a new event space in Fayetteville that is super open and bright and has tons of options for your ceremony & reception. It even has theater seating in some rooms – how cool would that be for a ceremony?

Event Center Wedding Venues in NWA

These Northwest Arkansas wedding venues are huge, and so perfectly suited for large weddings. I absolutely love seeing shows at the WAC, and a wedding is even better. They have tons and tons of that WOW factor, and they’re a different feel from the other venues in NWA!

Chapel Wedding Venues in NWA

If you’re hoping for a more traditional ceremony setting like a church, these chapels are great options. They range from architecturally stunning to old-world charm, and all of them are beautiful! St. Catherine’s absolutely shines when ceremonies are done on the lawn in front of the chapel as an incredible backdrop. Subiaco Abbey is the largest option on this part of the list, and just wait until you see photos of it!

Rustic/Barn Wedding Venues in NWA

Every rustic venue on this list has so much charm. Some of these barns are white, some are the natural wood color, and there’s even a black one and a red one. They each can host both your ceremony and reception, and they have gorgeous land around the venue to enjoy on your wedding day. If you’re looking for a barn venue with rustic charm, these are the best!

Small business owners are a category of humans that are near and dear to my heart. I started my own small business doing freelance graphic design when I was 19 and have had some kind of self-owned side hustle ever since, even as I held full-time design positions in my early 20s. My feelings about our responsibility to support local small businesses are strong for so many reasons!

People say it all the time: it takes a certain, special type of person to start a small business. And it’s true! It takes so much courage to put yourself out there, and so much grit to stick with it. And I don’t know about any of y’all, but I think restaurant owners have the most courage and grit out of all of us!

I also think that through the pandemic, restaurants have had it the toughest out of all of us. I can’t think of any other category of small businesses that had to pivot so incredibly much, so incredibly quickly. Restaurants who may have never even planned to offer delivery were suddenly facing the task of figuring out a whole ordering system on their own (or be taken advantage of by one of the big food delivery apps…but that’s a topic for another day). They had to reimagine their entire business structure at the drop of a hat, or risk going under.

And sadly, a lot of them have gone under, though not from lack of effort.

But what about the ones that are left? How can we support the locally owned restaurants, who are so important to our economy (and our taste buds)?

How to Support Local Small Businesses

  1. The first, and most obvious, is to order food from them. If you’re not comfortable with dining in, order it to-go.
  2. And before you hop on GrubHub or another popular ordering app, ask your favorite local restaurants if they still take to-go orders outside of those apps (like by phone). Chances are good that they do, and if you can manage to go pick it up yourself, you’ll be helping them survive (and avoid the predatory business practices of the delivery apps).
  3. Write reviews for them all over the internet! Literally all small businesses covet good reviews, and you hold the power to give them what they need. I’m not a restaurateur, but I go to Google, Yelp and Facebook to read and write reviews.
  4. Different experience, knowledge and tools are required for catering vs. running a restaurant, or at least that’s what I understand based on my outsider knowledge. But if your favorite restaurant offers catering, consider them for your wedding catering! The charcuterie display in the photos on this post are from a sandwich shop in Conway, AR, and it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.
  5. Buy gift cards! We’re not exactly taking friends to lunch right now, so if you have a little extra dough, funnel it into buying an occasional gift card. Send it to your friend & brighten their day!
  6. Support them on social media. Comment on their posts & share them to give them more visibility. Social media is always a struggle for small businesses, and regularly giving them a little more visibility to an audience could make a huge difference!

Northwest Arkansas is such a foodie place, and there are so many great local restaurants that I’d love to shout from the rooftops. But here are several of my tip-top favorites!

Thai Cuisine in Bentonville, AR – try the coconut soup & yellow curry! When I still ate meat, I added chicken and it was the bomb.com.

Trickdilly Tacos in Bentonville, AR – try the porkdilly tacos and queso fries! I haven’t been since I cut meat from my diet, but I’m excited to try the trickpea & cauliflower and the mushroom tacos when I go back. Maybe I’ll go today!

IDK Cafe + Catering in Rogers, AR – everything I’ve had from IDK has been delicious, but in particular, the IDKeto meals they offer are absolutely divine. If you’re on a Keto diet, the prices are good and the food is even better!

FLAVORS Indian Cuisine in Bentonville, AR – try the butter chicken! It’s so good! Flavors has catered a couple of my weddings, and I’ve wished I could just sit and eat and eat. Ha!

KOMODO Modern Asian Cuisine in Rogers, AR – the best potstickers I’ve ever had, and their beef & broccoli is to die for. It’s made with filet mignon!

Meme’s Caribbean Flavour in Rogers, AR – I’m dying to try her signature hand pies! If you try them, let me know how amazing they are!

I know there are tons of other wonderful local restaurants in NWA (I didn’t even touch on Springdale and Fayetteville), but these are the ones I have good experiences with and want to share. It would be almost impossible for me to list ALL of the restaurants here, but if you know of a great one that I should add to the list and would help support local small businesses, please email me at hello@corriechilders.com.

xo!

Making Your Wedding Family Formals List: If you’re like most couples, you might not have thought too much yet about making your family formals list. And that’s okay! This is a topic that I’ll bring up with you automatically, closer to your wedding date (…if I’m your wedding photographer) so we don’t forget to have a list made. But make no mistake – while I may be nonchalant about when we make this list, I am decidedly a stickler for being sure we definitely do make it at some point before your wedding day.

Because honestly, family photos can be one of the most important but most chaotic parts of the day. So let’s try our best to prepare you, okay?

Making Your Wedding Family Formals List

First, decide whether or not you want to do a First Look before the ceremony. If you are, that opens up some options for timing! A lot of couples do things in this order before the ceremony: first look, wedding party photos, then family photos. Each of these things will take approx. 30 minutes (if we do a few bride & groom portraits along with the first look).
If you’re not doing a first look, we’ll do your family photos immediately after your ceremony. Then your wedding party photos, then your bride & groom portraits.

(for more pros, cons & my thoughts on doing a first look, check out this blog post)

Second, write down your groupings. Now narrow it down to 10. If you can’t quite get to 10 while you’re making your wedding family formals list, just get as close as possible! Each grouping will average 2-3 minutes, so 10-15 groupings is 30-45 minutes (I know that seems like a lot, but when Uncle Frank is in the bathroom and your sister forgot and went on to the reception so someone has to go track her down, you’ll see). It’s smart to budget a little extra time!

That being said,  I am not a stickler for sticking to the list when we have extra time. For example, if I take a photo of you and your parents and you ask to take one with each of your parents individually, of course we’ll do that if there’s time & they’re both already standing right there. This step is just about prioritizing your groupings so that we are sure to get the most important groupings if we’re in a time crunch!

Third, take that list and order it so that we start with groupings that include small children and/or any elderly guests or guests with health or mobility issues (to minimize the number of times they have to hop in and out of photos).

Example:
1. Katie, Tommy, Katie’s parents, grandparents, sister/brother-in-law and their 2 kids
2. Katie, Tommy, Katie’s parents & grandparents
3. Katie, Tommy, Katie’s grandparents
4. Katie, Katie’s grandparents
5. Katie, Tommy, Katie’s parents

Additional Tips

Boom, your list is done! I have more to say on this topic though, so this post isn’t quite over. Here are a few more tips for, you know, handling family photos well.

  1. Let your photographer know if there are special family situations that you want them to be sensitive to, like divorce, death, new relationships, etc. If I’m your photographer, you can rest easy knowing that all this is covered on my world-famous wedding questionnaire. I’ll send it to you when you book, and we’ll finalize it a few weeks before your wedding when we’re working on your timeline. If I’m not your photographer, don’t forget about covering this important step with the person you’ve hired!
  2. Designate a guest or family member to be my list helper! Choose someone who knows all (or at least most) names/faces on the list and is loud. I’ve found that people with teaching jobs in their daily lives are great in this role! You can send them the list before the wedding, or I can just send it to them when it’s time for these photos.
  3. If we’re doing the family photos after the ceremony, you can ask your officiant to announce for your immediate family on both sides to stay. Or better yet, a few days before the wedding, you can start a group text with everyone who needs to stay and have a designated person send a reminder text right after the ceremony ends. “Hey everyone, meet on the east side of the chapel!” is much more quick and direct than 2 dozen family members wandering around asking each other where they’re supposed to go. And particularly if you have certain extended family members who need to stay but others who don’t, this technique can help ensure there’s not anyone who stays and then awkwardly isn’t in any of the formal groupings!

– Erin Duncan, Arkansas Wedding Planner –

Guys, I have loved so much showing ya’ll some of my favorite venues around the area (and there are still several coming), but today I’m switching gears a little bit. As a Northwest Arkansas wedding photographer I work with so many great vendors that deserve recognition, so I decided that I’d love to keep using my blog as a place to promote the ones I love from all parts of the wedding industry! Next up: Erin Duncan, an Arkansas Wedding Planner.

I have a pretty healthy mix of weddings with planners and weddings without them, and I can tell you from first hand experience what a difference it can make to have an Arkansas wedding planner helping you plan and coordinate everything on the day of your wedding. It takes an enormous amount of stress and pressure off of the bride and groom (and usually their moms too, real talk) and allows you all to just enjoy the whole wedding process, culminating in a day that has been personalized for you with such care and attention to detail.

Now, this lady right here takes the first spot in the Arkansas wedding planner category. Erin is the sweetest thing and has such creative and beautiful ideas, she’s super classy, super organized and so easy to talk to and brainstorm with. I sent her a little interview so you all could learn a little more about her and what she does (we also did some fun headshots at my studio in Rogers)! Now keep reading!

How did you get involved with weddings & events?
My involvement in weddings began when I was in college and majoring in hospitality at the University of Arkansas. I have a friend in Dallas who was working in the industry and started her own planning company. I would travel to Dallas to help her on the day of the wedding and that is when I developed a passion to coordinate weddings. Throughout high school and college I also planned various events for groups and organizations. When I graduated college, I started my own business and began coordinating weddings on the side of my full-time job!

What was your first event?
The first event I ever planned was for my parents wedding anniversary when I was ten years old. I coordinated with the neighbor to host a dinner party for my parents and a few of their plans. I can still remember the little notepad I used to “secretly” get phone numbers of my parents friends. I am sure my parents knew something was up, but I was tried my best to be discrete! It was a really simple dinner but I remember how fun it was to plan something for them!

Are there any services you offer other than planning?
In addition to my planning services, I also offer floral and event design. I love collaborating with clients to create completely customized events that reflect their personality and really wow guests!

What are your favorite wedding trends this year?
I have a very traditional and classic style and I love incorporating trends and unique ideas specific to the personality of my client. For example, one of our couples love craft beer so we created a “Bites & Brews” bar that featured a selection of craft beer and salty bites!

What tips do you have for brides planning a wedding?
-Trust your vendors to do what they love and do best. That’s why you hired them!
-Think of your guests when planning the ceremony and reception. You want to make sure they are comfortable and have fun!
-Don’t get caught up in ALL the details. With access to so many resources and ideas on social media, it’s easy to get carried away.

What has been your favorite celebrity wedding?
Kate Middleton and Prince William! What’s not to love about a royal wedding? Need I say more?

Do you have any advice for wedding planners just starting their business?
You learn something from every wedding and event you plan and coordinate so don’t be afraid to keep improving your planning process.

How do you initially meet with the bride or couple planning their wedding?
I think it is important to meet with the bride or couple face to face. This gives me the opportunity to explain the planning process and answer any questions. It also gives us the opportunity to get to know each other and make sure it will be a good fit for everyone. The wedding planning process is very personal and I always strive to ensure there are clear expectations from start to finish!

Do you have any events or interesting projects coming up?
In addition to some beautiful spring weddings, I have some exciting collaborations coming up! I look forward to sharing more details and inspiration for brides. Stay tuned!

What is your favorite flower?
Orchids. They are so crisp and timeless!

What would you say to a bride that doesn’t think a planner is important to fit into her budget?
I think a planner can be so valuable throughout the planning process and on the wedding day. There are tips and ideas planners can provide that not only help guide the planning process but also ensure a seamless event. With that said, it is important for the bride to decide what is best for her and overall wedding plans.

If you could choose anywhere in the world what would be your dream destination wedding location?
Oh my goodness, there are so many incredible places and venues around the world! I think it would be incredible to plan a wedding at The Palace of Versailles. The perfect venue for an insanely elegant wedding!

– Arkansas Engagement Photos –

Guys, it’s COLD here. I mean, for a Southern state. We got some snow last week (not enough to be pretty, sadly) and ice that made the roads a bit treacherous (especially the little winding road that leads to our neighborhood, up a hill and with a sharp drop off on one side…yikes), and it’s been sub-freezing ever since. It’s been in the negative temps at night!! Ya’ll! I can’t! I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this here before, but I’m from Texas and this kind of weather is so not my jam. But you know what? Sometimes you find a reason to brave the cold, and these two were a great reason indeed. The day we did Megan and Alex’s Arkansas engagement photos in Petit Jean State Park, it was snowing and sleeting at my house. As I headed farther southeast to the park (it’s about a 3 hour drive for me), the weather cleared and the sun came out, and the temperatures rose about 20 degrees! Megan and I were texting all about how amazing it was that the weather was going to be perfect, we were so excited! And then as soon as we got there and got ready to shoot, the temps dropped and the wind picked up, and they just about froze to death. But you can’t tell , right?! They were super troopers, perfectly willing to do whatever I asked and they were so joyful through it all.

When these two inquired about wedding photography a few months ago, I totally creeped Megan’s Instagram account and found the link to their proposal story. I feel like I’d be remiss if I didn’t share a link to that here, because it’s just SO GOOD. Alex obviously put a ton of time and effort into making it perfect (I legit cried when I got to the picture of Megan sitting on their swing). Go read it (and weep)!

Here are some of my very favorites from their beautiful (and cold!) engagement session. Enjoy!!

– Arkansas Weddings 2017: In Review –

Goodness gracious, you guys. There’s no way we’re already in 2018. Right? Riiiiiight? I feel like I just blinked and the year went by, except that I have so many marvelous memories from the year that had to have come from somewhere. I spent so much time with gorgeous brides and dapper grooms at Arkansas weddings (and Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Oklahoma weddings…), witnessed so much love and joy and commitment to forever that it could fill me for a lifetime. Oh, and sparkly things. So many sparkly things.

Heirloom handkerchiefs and rings and veils, lace gowns and chiffon gowns, princess cut diamonds and cushion cut diamonds.

Bridal sneakers with glitter and the fanciest Jimmy Choos and Louboutin pumps (sometimes also with glitter).

Garden roses and peonies and protea and succulents and baby’s breath (so much baby’s breath).

2017 was an amazing year for this little venture of mine. I did the highest number of weddings so far in my career (about 35 full weddings, and a few elopements and reception-only gigs) and was so exhausted and HAPPY. Nothing makes me more fulfilled than this work I do for my precious clients and friends. In 2018 I’m going to scale back a bit to 25 full weddings so I don’t find myself missing my family SO many weekends in a row during busy season, but I’m so looking forward to each and every amazing day with my amazing clients all over Northwest and Central Arkansas this year. And to be honest, we’ll see if I can even bring myself to turn any sweet brides away once I hit 25. Ha!

So to celebrate the New Year (I know, I’m a week late! But I did my best!) I went through the weddings I shot this year and grabbed my favorites…and I came up with 634 favorites. Yikes!! That would be one super mega long blog post that probably nobody would even read, so I whittled it down farther. But not too far! There are still 99 images, most of which I’ve never blogged before (that was kind of a goal when I was selecting them). This was actually kind of an interesting exercise because it showed me what I’m really really drawn to. It’s not surprising that the obvious answers are JOY, genuine emotion, and moments of tenderness between people that love each other. Scroll and enjoy, and have a Happy New Year!! Nothing like new beginnings, eh?
